The Walsall Football Supporters’ Trust has raised concerns that, despite the new rail stations at Willenhall and Darlaston due to open on 19 March, there is still no indication that trains will stop at Bescot Stadium Station en route to Birmingham New Street.
On behalf of the Trust, secretary, Ray Dale contacted West Midlands Railway Customer Services to seek confirmation on the details of the new timetable. The current understanding is that Tame Bridge appears to be the next stop after Darlaston, likely due to its status as a Park and Ride facility.
This is a significant issue for Walsall supporters and the wider community. Bescot Stadium Station should be a key part of local matchday and community transport infrastructure. The Trust believes it will take a concerted effort from Walsall Council, Walsall Football Club, and supporters to press for this to change.
The Trust will also be contacting Valerie Vaz MP tomorrow to raise the matter further.
Supporters may also wish to make the case directly to West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, who Valerie Vaz has indicated is due to attend the game next Tuesday. This could be an important opportunity to highlight the case for improved rail access to Bescot Stadium.
The question of disabled access at the station remains a longer-term issue, but one which must also stay firmly on the agenda.
The Trust will continue to press for clarity and improvement on behalf of supporters.
