The Walsall Football Supporters’ Trust has signed an Open Letter organised by the Football Supporters Association in response to the announcement of a General Election by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.
The highly anticipated Football Governance Bill, expected to bring significant reforms to the sport, will not progress as planned and will now depend on the actions of the forthcoming government.
The Trust expressed its commitment to the principles outlined in the Open Letter, which calls for the next government to prioritise the introduction of the Football Governance Bill, to include it in their manifesto and then as part of the King’s Speech.
This legislation aims to enhance the regulatory framework of football, ensuring greater accountability and sustainability within the sport.
A spokesperson for the Walsall Football Supporters’ Trust stated, “While we are disappointed that the Football Governance Bill will not pass in this parliamentary session, we remain hopeful. The commitment of the football community to these reforms is unwavering, and we urge the next government to recognise the importance of this issue to fans across the country.”
The Open Letter has garnered support from various supporter groups nationwide, reflecting widespread concern within the football community about the future governance of the sport. The Trust encourages all supporters to engage with their local representatives to ensure that football’s best interests are represented in the political arena.
As the general election approaches, the Walsall Football Supporters’ Trust pledges to keep the community informed and involved in advocacy efforts to push the Football Governance Bill to the forefront of the political agenda.
